What is Chikungunya?

Chikungunya is an infection caused by the chikungunya virus. The virus is spread between people by two types of mosquitos: Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti. They mainly bite during the day. The virus may circulate within a number of animals including birds and rodents. Its symptoms are fever and joint pain, headache, muscle pain, joint swelling and rashes. This diease typically occur two to twelve days after exposure. The symptoms of Chikunguniya can be mistaken for those of dengue fever and Zika fever. After a single infection it is believed most people become immune.

Most people are better within a week; however, occasionally the joint pain may last for months. The risk of death is around 1 in 1,000. The very young, old, and those with other health problems are at risk of more severe disease. The best means of prevention is overall mosquito control.

There is no cure for chikungunya, and no vaccine to prevent it. So, its treatment is focused on relieving the symptoms. An infected person needs to rest, drink lots of fluids, and take medicines prescribed by doctor to relieve fever and pain until the symptoms fade. Treat the symptoms:

Chikungunya is not a contagious disease. Humans are thought to be the major source, or reservoir, of chikungunya virus for mosquitoes. An infected person cannot spread the infection directly to other persons. The mosquito usually transmits the disease by biting an infected person and then biting someone else.
